Conflicts

I have never seen The Waterboy, but this is sorta funny. Probably not the best way to deal with a conflict...

What if? Twitter posts

The question was posed in class: "If you had the chance to have a perfect love, but at the end of one year the person you loved would die, would you still pursue that relationship?" Then another question was posed a few days later: "What if after a year the person would not die, but would instead betray you? Would u still pursue the relationship?" This was an interesting topic to think about. I don't know that my answers are, or ever would be, definite "yes" or "no" answers, but here are some of my thoughts and comments that I tweeted about on twitter:
  1. I'm sure the Savior didn't stop loving Peter even after Peter denied him three times. Nor do I think the Savior regretted knowing Peter
  2. My first thought was that I would never pursue a relationship that would end in betrayal, but maybe I would if I knew why they did it.
  3. @SisEmbree It would be hard knowing what was coming. And as humans I think we try to protect ourselves from hurt. That might make it hard.
  4. @SisEmbree It would make me want to only focus on the good things and forget about the bad. Honestly, I would prbly be depressed a lot too.
  5. I think it would still be worth persuing. The memories would be worth it! It would hurt more, but it would also bring more happiness.

The Armful

For every parcel I stoop down to seize
I lose some other off my arms and knees,
And the whole pile is slipping, bottles, buns --
Extremes too hard to comprehend at once,
Yet nothing I should care to leave behind.
With all I have to hold with hand and mind
And heart, if need be, I will do my best
To keep their building balanced at my breast.
I crouch down to prevent them as they fall;
Then sit down in the middle of them all.
I had to drop the armful in the road
And try to stack them in a better load.

~ Robert Frost

Sometimes I feel like this poem is the story of my existence! What is my deal? With everything that I have going on, is it possible to get everything organized enough to have some semblance of order... ever? I also feel like this poem illustrates how communication can be for me at times! :) Even after this interpersonal communication class! Every time I decide to work on one dimension of my communication I seem to struggle with another area. So, then I work on that area...and plop, I lost something else. It took me a little while, but I started to realize...that's okay! I can continue to try and improve, and I will get where I need to be eventually. I may be old and wrinkly with only a few short days to live, but by golly, I will get there!

Emotional times, and a limited vocabulary

What came first the chicken or the egg? Maybe an equally confusing question could be: is nonverbal communication such a big part of the way people communicate because we depended on it for survival when we were babies? Or did we depend on nonverbal communication for survival because it was such an important part of the way people communicate?
In either case, it's interesting to think that during the stage of our lives when we have so many needs, and so little control of our emotions, we also have such a limited, if not nonexistent, vocabulary. How else would anyone know what little people need if not for nonverbal communication?

I love this little collage of pictures! My sister-in-law made it to help teach my nieces about emotions. It's amazing to me how well my nieces were able to recreate some of the emotions through their nonverbal language.

Strategic Language Tweets

  1. I think my four words would have to be: Great, good deal, and funny.
  2. @JaredNeibaur Those what you ought to know videos you posted are great! I loved the one on grammar! I had to watch it a couple times.
  3. @RyaJam I am not too convinced. I have seen enough info on both sides that I tend to believe it is just being used as a political tool.
  4. Lots of strategic language in these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma_4AmB9M30&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnt3FWToSWs,
